Is Your Senior Living Website a Man Lob or a Content Mullet?

August 23, 2016

Keeping our website updated is a lot like maintaining a hair style. Every month or two we take a little off the top and clean up around the edges. We might tweak a few things, but nothing too crazy. That’s the SCS approach anyway.

But once a year, usually in late August, we take a deep dive and make sure our site is more man lob or even man bun than mullet.

You know what I mean by mullet right?

Business in the front and party in the back. Outdated and just kind of… unattractive.

The Senior Living Content Mullet

While we are planning to do a major re-branding in the first quarter of 2017 as we celebrate our 5th anniversary, we know it’s still important to pull out the razor and cut off the party in the back.

Avoiding the Content Mullet

Wondering what you might need to do to avoid the content mullet?

Here are a few tips:

  • Block out some quiet time: Yep… easier said than done. I hear ‘ya. But your goal should be to dig in to your site and see what looks dated. While there is such a thing as evergreen content in senior living, sometimes content just looks old.
  • Make a list of necessary changes: Whether it’s in an Excel spreadsheet or on the back of a 100% recyclable Whole Foods brown bag from your salad bar lunch, the idea is to create a big old list of what needs updating.

  • Prioritize the changes: If you haven’t done this before, it can be a bit overwhelming. But once you have your list, prioritize which changes you need to make first. Then tackle a few a week until your list is completed.

What’s Missing on Your Senior Living Website?

This part can be tricky.

How do you know what’s missing if you don’t know what you need?

Good question!

Here are a few simple tips to at least get you started:

  • Spend some time in our Senior Care Content Learning Center and on this blog. You will likely find inspiration.
  • Visitor your competitors sites and see how your site stacks up against them.
  • Hop on Google and conduct a search of relevant key words and phrases families searching for senior living use. Who is beating you in the results? Check out their sites to see why.
  • Find an SEO consultant you trust who has industry experience. In a world filled with black hat SEO guys, this is tricky. If you aren’t having any luck, shoot us a note and we can send you a few names of white hats…

Or you can just Contact us for help! We can work with you to create the fresh, industry relevant content your site needs to make families and Google happy campers.
